NEA Big Read - "In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex" by Nathaniel Philbrick

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.  Worcester County Library Foundation is honored to be one of 78 communities selected as an NEA Big Read recipient.  The Library Foundation celebrates the National Book Award Winner In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick with many events.

  • Please join us for the kickoff event on March 14th at the Mar-Va Theater and Performing Arts Center in Pocomoke, Maryland with FREE Show times of the movie version; 11 am, 2 pm, and 5 pm.
  • On April 2 at 7:00 pm keynote speaker and author Nathaniel Philbrick will discuss his book and the Big Read program.  Book signing to follow.  (Stephen Decatur High School, contact Elena Coelho 443-783-6164)
  • Discover the fate of the Essex through the free books available at all branches.
  • To complement the reading, the library will screen In the Heart of the Sea and Moby Dick, introduce creative writing workshops, host book discussions, perform a reader’s theater from “Wreck of the Whaleship Essex,” offer readings from the Ocean City Life-Saving Logs and tours of the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum.
