Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities. This 2-week book talk examines how science fiction has influenced today's society and culture. The discussions are led by Cynthia Hanagud.

A Taste of the Arts

Join the Worcester County Library Foundation and the Worcester County Arts Council for their second Taste of the Arts Event. This year the event will be held in the Assateague Room at the Ocean Pines Community Center. Local art will be on display and for sale. There will be refreshments and music by Apple & Britt. Tickets are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door and may be purchased at the Worcester County Arts Council or by calling 410-641-0809.

2014 One Maryland One Book - The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande
Join us for our monthly book club. This month's title is the selection for the One Maryland One Book adult book club program, in which people from across the state read the same book to open discussion, learning, and community. Copies of each month's selection are available in advance at the Berlin Branch.

In The Distance Between Us the American Book Award-winning author of Across a Hundred Mountains traces her experiences as an illegal child immigrant, describing how her parents' dreams of better opportunities for their family were marked by her father's violent alcoholism, her efforts to obtain a higher education and the inspiration of Latina authors.

Discussions are led by Gail Samis and Cynthia Hanagud of Salisbury University. Browse the calendar of events for supporting programs related to this year's book! This program is funded in part the Maryland Humanities Council.

Shared Visions

Location: O.C. Center for the Arts, Ocean City, MD
Shared Visions: the collaborative works of local literary and visual artists will open the 2015 year at the Ocean City Center for the Arts. This joint exhibit will be on display throughout the entire month of January. We cordially invite visitors to join us for the Opening Reception, January 2, 2015, and then to return, often, throughout the month to enjoy the exhibit. The formal presentation of literary works will be held, 6-8 p.m., January 20, 2015. Come chat with the visual and literary artists and enjoy their blended 'visions'. Refreshments will be served.
