Roy Lichtenstein: Beyond the Comics
Wednesday, March 21, 2018 - 2:00 PM
Location: Berlin Branch
Pop Art embraced imagery of a consumer based society, celebrity, and everyday events as depicted within media such as television, film, and magazines. Realistically rendered, these canvases denoted the banal, mundane, and commonplace goods of the era and comment on clichés, popular entertainment, and the stereotypes they embody.
Though much scholarship explores Roy Lichtenstein’s comic strip works, this discussion will investigate works fashioned after his art that nod to artists who precede him. Our lecture will look at Lichtenstein beyond his comic strip paintings and compare his work with other Pop artists of the 1960s. Presented by Elena Coelho.

Claudia Quinta and the Famous Italian Panels
Wednesday, May 16, 2017 - 2:00 PM
Location: Berlin Branch
Claudia Quinta offers a work taken from ancient mythology and one that demonstrates the influences of the Sienese tradition of art. Claudia Quinta denotes a falsely accused, ultimately chaste woman echoing the purity of the Madonna while providing an exemplar of virtue to Renaissance women. In the fifteenth century, in particular Northern and Central Italy, these images began to be painted on panels and then inserted into the wooden paneling of a room. The subject matter typically corresponded with the room. Whereas wisdom, justice, constancy, magnanimity, and courage were placed in a study or drawing room in the realm of the public, images addressing fidelity, purity, prudence, and conjugal love rested in the private rooms of young married couples from esteemed and wealthy families. Claudia Quinta represents one of the latter. She marks a warning to Renaissance women to remain chaste. The entire series of Famous Men and Women represents an unusual cycle and includes of Joseph of Egypt, Alexander the Great, Tiberius Gracchus, and Artemisia, Scipio Africanus and Sulpicia. This program will explore all of their stories and consider the warnings made to those of the time.
