Victoria Christie-Healy, the club organizer has been knitting since childhood. Victoria and her husband and business partner Mike Healy relocated to Ocean Pines in March of 2015. Her career as a knitting teacher started at the Reston Community Center in 2009 and grew over the next four years to several other community centers in Northern Virginia. She has taught several hundred women (and some men) how to knit. She conducts several knitting retreats a year in Ireland.

Writing for Wellness

Research has shown that writing about stressful experiences, like illness, may boost health & psychological well-being. Group uses exercise to stimulate the process for creative expression. No prior writing experience needed. This program is facilitated by Andrea Schlottman.

This week's selection is the novel Voss by Patrick White. Set in the 19th century, Voss is an adventure narrative that focuses on an explorer in Australia as he is challenged by hardship, mutiny and betrayal.

Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher in Concert
Thursday, September 14 - 7 pm
Location: Ocean Pines Branch
Peter Fletcher performs more than 100 concerts every year, and has recorded several albums for the Centaur and Towerhill record labels. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music. His three albums for Centaur Records feature guitar transcriptions of works by Federico Mompou, Erik Satie, and Edvard Grieg that have never before been recorded on guitar. Peter has performed at Carnegie Hall to a sold out audience for several years. Doors will close once seating capacity is full.

Renowned genealogist M.K. Miles will join us to showcase his “Miles Files” and do demos of Ancestry Live. Miles, who has researched the genealogy of many of the families of the Eastern Shore for more than 30 years, is the author of the “Miles Files” which is housed online at the Eastern Shore Public Library, boasts a list of 60,000 names.

One Maryland One Book Program: Feminism in West Africa

Feminism is a strong theme in this year’s One Maryland One Book selection Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Dr. James King of Salisbury University will explore the challenges presented by West African culture with regard to the discussion of feminism. In what ways to vestiges of male patriarchal dominance persist in the culture and life of West Africans, living in the 21st Century? How do the women of these African nations reconcile themselves to both responsibilities, their ancestral past, and the new millennium?

Alice’s Ordinary People

Alice’s Ordinary People is a documentary DVD about Alice Tregay, an unsung heroine of the Civil Rights Movement. Her remarkable story spans the historic period from the marches of Dr. King to the election of Barack Obama. Alice’s contribution to the field of politics is the thread which connects the two. Audience will also meet filmmaker, Craig Dudnick, and learn why and how he came to make the film and the circumstances in Chicago which drew Alice to the Civil Rights Movement. Alice was featured on the NPR program “The Story with Dick Gordon.”

One Maryland One Book Program: Music of the West African Kora
Wednesday, November 1 - 1 pm
Location: Ocean Pines Branch
Presenter Sean Gaskell will play music on the West African Kora and talks about its origins. The West African Kora is a 21 string harp that is native to the Mandinka people of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea Bissau. It dates back 300 years, although some of the music comes from the middle 13th century around the founding of the Mandinka empire. Sean studied with master Kora players Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh from the Gambia over the course of multiple visits.
