Research has shown that writing about stressful experiences, like illness, may boost health & psychological well-being. Group uses exercises to stimulate the process for creative expression. No prior writing experience needed.

Halloween Costume Swap
Monday, October 23 - 3 -6 pm
Location: Ocean Pines Branch
Has your child outgrown their Halloween costume but it still looks brand new? Drop off costumes and accessories at the library from October 9 - 20 for a community costume swap. When you drop off an item you will receive a token to redeem at the event on October 23.

One Maryland One Book Program: Feminism in West Africa
Tuesday, October 24 - 2 pm
Location: Ocean Pines Branch
Feminism is a strong theme in this year’s One Maryland One Book selection Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Dr. James King of Salisbury University will explore the challenges presented by West African culture with regard to the discussion of feminism. In what ways to vestiges of male patriarchal dominance persist in the culture and life of West Africans, living in the 21st Century? How do the women of these African nations reconcile themselves to both responsibilities, their ancestral past, and the new millennium?


Worcester County Library Foundation Paint Night (CANCELLED)
Tuesday, October 24 - 6 pm

Mindfulness and Meditation

Alice’s Ordinary People
Thursday, October 26 - 2 pm
Location: Ocean Pines Branch
Alice’s Ordinary People is a documentary DVD about Alice Tregay, an unsung heroine of the Civil Rights Movement. Her remarkable story spans the historic period from the marches of Dr. King to the election of Barack Obama. Alice’s contribution to the field of politics is the thread which connects the two. Audience will also meet filmmaker, Craig Dudnick, and learn why and how he came to make the film and the circumstances in Chicago which drew Alice to the Civil Rights Movement. Alice was featured on the NPR program “The Story with Dick Gordon.”


Ballycastle Knits

Victoria Christie-Healy, the club organizer has been knitting since childhood. Victoria and her husband and business partner Mike Healy relocated to Ocean Pines in March of 2015. Her career as a knitting teacher started at the Reston Community Center in 2009 and grew over the next four years to several other community centers in Northern Virginia. She has taught several hundred women (and some men) how to knit. She conducts several knitting retreats a year in Ireland.

One Maryland One Book Program: Music of the West African Kora
Wednesday, November 1 - 1 pm
Location: Ocean Pines Branch
Presenter Sean Gaskell will play music on the West African Kora and talks about its origins. The West African Kora is a 21 string harp that is native to the Mandinka people of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea Bissau. It dates back 300 years, although some of the music comes from the middle 13th century around the founding of the Mandinka empire. Sean studied with master Kora players Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh from the Gambia over the course of multiple visits.
