Eye Witness Observations and Video Recordings of Criminal Events: A One Maryland One Book Program
Wednesday, September 28 - 2:00 pm
Location: Ocean Pines Branch
Research in psychology has long questioned the accuracy of eye witness accounts of criminal acts. As video recordings of these events have become more common, particularly events involving the use of force by police officers, new questions have been raised about how accurately individuals interpret these events. In the book All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brian Kiely, a violent altercation involving a teenager and a police officer is videotaped and viewed by countless individuals. The interpretations of the event may not always coincide with the eyewitness accounts of those that were actually there that day. This presentation provides connections between research in psychology on this topic as well as specific details described in the fictional novel. This presentation is facilitated by Dr.Lance Garmon of Salisbury University and funded in part by a grant through the Maryland Humanities Council.

Racial Disparity in the Justice System of America: A One Maryland One Book program
Monday, October 17, 2016 - 2 pm
Location: Ocean City Branch
Many in our society have become increasingly aware of potential differences in how members of various races are treated by the legal system in America, whether that involves police brutality cases or sentencing disparities and prison sentences. The field of psychology has studied these issues to determine how much of this differential treatment is based on race and how much is a result of other issues. When examining this topic from the perspective of the book All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, we are not only able to see the events through the eyes of a black teenager who is treated unfairly by a member of the police force, but we also get to see the same events from the perspective of a white teenager who is both a bystander to the violent encounter and has a personal relationship with the police officer. This presentation is facilitated by Dr. Lance Garmon of Salisbury University and funded through a grant by the Maryland Humanities Council.

Berlin Book of the Month - All American Boys

All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely is the One Maryland One Book selection for 2016.
"With Reynolds writing Rashad’s first-person narrative and Kiely Quinn’s, this hard-edged, ripped-from-the-headlines book is more than a problem novel; it’s a carefully plotted, psychologically acute, character-driven work of fiction that dramatizes an all-too-frequent occurrence. Police brutality and race relations in America are issues that demand debate and discussion, which his superb book powerfully enables.” - Booklist
