Ocean City Life Saving Museum Series: “The Storm of the Century”

In March 1962, Ocean City experienced a violent, three-day storm more devastating to the town than any in its history. By the time the storm peaked, sea levels were 9 1/2 feet above normal. McCall’s debut novel focuses on the old 4th Ward of Atlanta, former home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The neighborhood is changing, as white couples find this the perfect place to resettle. A young white couple moves in next door to Barlowe Reed, an African American through whom McCall filters the anger, tensions, and sensibilities of the community. With his new neighbor Sandy and her husband, Sean, old grievances, beliefs, and hopes are explored and tested.
