ModPo-Plus—Course Introduction

Location: Ocean City Branch
This 10-month course, offered in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania, begins in September and opens with the 19th-century works of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman. Subsequent classes cover the general cultural transitions from modernism to post-modernism. Participants will need to register for ModPo through Coursera.org and create their own login name and password. Registration help will be offered at the introductory class. Lessons will be sent directly to your email address. Each video-recorded session consists of a reading and discussion of a single poem by Professor Al Filreis of the University of Pennsylvania. Course discussion sessions will be held monthly at the Ocean City Library, 1-3 pm, on the third Friday of each month beginning September 19th. Participants are not required to have any prior knowledge of poetry or poetics to join the program. The class is limited to 18 participants; call 410-524-1818 to register.

Dutch Apple Dinner Theater - “Hairspray: the Musical”

Join us as we head to Amish County to the Dutch Apple Dinner Theater for lunch and a show. Hairspray the musical is a masterpiece in musical theater. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues. In 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Tickets are $90.00 and may be purchased at the Ocean Pines Branch of the Worcester County Library or by calling Lisa Outten Stant at 410-632-3970. Buses leave the from behind the Post Office in Snow Hill at 6:30 am and from the Ocean Pines Library at 7 am. This trip is sponsored by the Worcester County Library Foundation. Seating is limited.

Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities.
This 2-week book talk examines how science fiction has influenced today's society and culture. The discussions are led by Cynthia Hanagud. Our second session will take place on Friday, September 26.

Aerial Dance

Watch an aerial dance routine on 16-foot rigging and step-by-step demonstrations of particular moves. Learn the history of aerial dance and find out where this new art form is going. Program is held outside. Bring your lawn chair! Rain date is Thursday, October 16. All ages welcome.
