Roy Lichtenstein: Beyond the Comics
Time: 2:00 PM
Location: Berlin Branch
Pop Art embraced imagery of a consumer based society, celebrity, and everyday events as depicted within media such as television, film, and magazines. Realistically rendered, these canvases denoted the banal, mundane, and commonplace goods of the era and comment on clichés, popular entertainment, and the stereotypes they embody.
Though much scholarship explores Roy Lichtenstein’s comic strip works, this discussion will investigate works fashioned after his art that nod to artists who precede him. Our lecture will look at Lichtenstein beyond his comic strip paintings and compare his work with other Pop artists of the 1960s. Presented by Elena Coelho.
