InterLibrary Loan

What is Interlibrary Loan Service?
If the Worcester County Library does not own a specific title and it cannot be found within our lending consortium, it may be possible to obtain a copy through our Interlibrary Loan service (ILL). Our ILL program draws from two resources— Marina & OCLC.

Marina – a statewide lending cooperative which draws from public libraries throughout the state of Maryland.
Materials requested via Marina may take up to two weeks to arrive. Items obtained from Marina are free of charge and can be loaned out for 3 weeks. Marina items can be renewed two times.
OCLC – a national lending collaborative.
Materials not available through Marina can be requested via OCLC. These items may take two weeks or more to arrive depending on availability and delivery methods. Items obtained from OCLC are free of charge and are usually loaned for 3 weeks. Some lending libraries may require a shortened loan period. OCLC items are not renewable.

Restricted Materials
Some requested materials may be designated as restricted by the lending library. This means that materials cannot be checked out to a patron’s card but must be used within a Worcester County Library branch of your choice. When you receive the materials, you will be asked to hand over some form of identification. This identification will be held until you return the material to the circulation desk.

Who can use this service?
All current Worcester County Library cardholders with an account in good standing may request material through the ILL. Patrons will be notified by telephone or email when their materials arrive at the library. ILL materials can be returned at any Worcester County Library branch. Please do not put ILL materials in the bookdrop. To ensure your book is returned to the lending library, do not remove the white lending label band on the book. Charges for lost or damaged materials, as well as overdue charges for Interlibrary Loan items, are the responsibility of the borrower. ILL privileges may be suspended if:
• Patron requests items frequently and does not pick them up.
• Materials are returned late.

What is not available through ILL?
• Materials owned by Lower Shore Library Consortium.
• Downloadable items such as eBooks and downloadable audiobooks.
• Popular authors and / or newest titles. Lending libraries will not loan materials that have been published within the last 6 months, or if due to high demand, 12 months.
• Computer software.

What is available through ILS?
• Audio Visual Material. (audiobooks, CDs, microfilm, microfiche and videos) Limited availability due to a shortage of AV lenders.
• Books.
• Photocopies of newspaper, magazine, or journal articles.
• Genealogy / Local history materials. Limited availability due to most items listed as “non-circulating.” Photocopies of specific information can be requested by borrower. Please provide as much information as possible about what is needed so that you do not receive duplicate information.

How to make a request in Marina?
1. Click on this link Marina. (opens in new window)
2. Type your library card number, without spaces, and press Enter.
3. In the search screen that appears, type search terms and press Enter (or select Advanced Search).
4. Select the desired title from the results and verify that at least one copy is marked "Requestable".
5. Select a Worcester County Library pickup branch and click Request.
You will be given a request number. If you have an email address associated with your library card, you will receive an email confirming your request.

How to check the status of my Marina account?
• Log in to Marina with your library card number.
• Click on "My Account" at the top of the Marina screen to see a list of the requests made.
• Click on a request number to check the status of that request:
Pending -- The owning library is checking its shelves.
Shipped -- The item has been sent but has not yet reached BCPL.
Received -- The item has been received and will be available for pickup soon.
Returned -- The item has been returned to the loaning library.
Unfilled -- The item is unavailable through Marina.
• Close the status window to return to the search/request screen
• To cancel a request, please contact library staff in person, by phone, or via email.

How to make a request in OCLC?
• Log in to Marina with your library card number.
• In the search screen that appears, type search terms and press Enter.
• If not results were found, click the blue ILL Loan Request tab or go to “My Account” at the top of the screen.
• Under the Add Request column, select the Book link.
• Please provide complete information about the item you are requesting (author, title, edition, publication date) and any deadline that applies.
• Select a pickup location from the drop down menu. This is where your material will be sent.

You will be given a request number. If you have an email address associated with your library card, you will receive an email confirming your request.
